Preface

Angkor, a pride of Cambodia, is one of the Four Wonders of the East together with the Great Wall of China, Taj Mahal of India, and Borobudur of Indonesia. Though having been discarded for more than 400 years, this place has condensed wisdom and creativity of Khmer and presents the unique Oriental ideological and artistic aesthetics. Therefore, after it was brought to light, it was inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO for its great cultural value and has attracted world attention.

The beginning of the era of the Khmer Empire is conventionally dated to 802CE, and had a history of the Khmer kingdom from the 9th to the 13th centuries. Its competitive power and prosperous culture enabled it to exert profound influence on almost all countries in the Indo-China Peninsula and lay a foundation for its dominate role in languages and religions of countries in the peninsula. In the 13th century, Angkor was the most magnificent capital city in Asia. During its 400-plus years history, the Khmer Empire had built more than 600 structures of different sizes in forested areas extending about 45 square kilometers. Among them, Angkor Watis the best-preserved temple at the whole site, and its symbol, the five towers, are part of Cambodian national flag, mirroring the unique sacred status of the temple in the country. Boasting profound history and rich cultural significance, the current remains preserved so far have attracted a large number of people all over the world to come and pay their homage. Whether the smile image of Bayon, or the dream of Angkor, each presents to visitors a significant part of its charisma.

As far as I know, Mr. Chen Lyusheng, former Deputy Director of the National Museum of China, has been to many countries. With great enthusiasm for cultural heritage preservation, he has kept taking photos to record the cultural heritage in places where he visited, in hope of promoting the cultural heritage preservation and museum cause. Once he told me face to face about his aspiration to visit museums and Angkor historic site in Cambodia. In October 2016, he realized his dream, visiting the place and taking a lot of soul-stirring photos. He also surprised me by selecting these wonderful photos and holding this exhibition within such a short period. His respect and love for Khmer history and culture, and his passion for and dedication to cultural heritage preservation are expressed through his personal visit and exhibition, which is far beyond the scope of photography and art.

Through both wide-angle and close-up lens, Mr. Chen presented the heritage architecture, structural frames, door lintels, columns, ceilings and other building components as well as their natural settings which in various relief patterns and a partial focus . With a professional status in the cultural heritage and museum field, unique understanding of the Khmer culture and the historic Site of Angkor, and years of experience in photography and art, he selects and captures the beauty among the great varieties of objects, and endows his photos with extraordinary excellence to present the aesthetical charisma that has a unique identity.

This exhibition is held to promote the special significance of the friendship and cultural communication between Cambodia and China. We welcome Chinese friends to visit our country and enjoy our history and development as well as cultural diversity, which will contribute to continuing the friendly partnership between the two countries.
